Volleyball Picks Up Key Road Win, Knocks Off Binghamton 3-1

VESTAL, N.Y. – Three Retrievers recorded double-digit kills, including 14 by sophomore Emily Vandegrift (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) and the UMBC volleyball team rebounded quickly from a Friday night defeat to knock off Binghamton 3-1 Sunday afternoon at West Gym.  Vandegrift also picked up ten digs to record the double-double.

With the win, the Retrievers (13-11, 3-6 America East) move back into a tie with the Bearcats, but remain a half game back of Hartford who did not play on Sunday.

In addition to Vandegrift's kills, senior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) and freshman Dalton Tolliver (Ortonville, Mich./Notre Dame Prep)) each notched 11 kills in the contest.  Kennedy also had five block assists, while Tolliver finished with seven block assists.

Vandegrift was also one of two Retrievers to pick up a double-double on the day, as senior Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) recorded 42 assists and 11 digs for her 12th of the season.

Junior Hallie Carter(Huntington Beach, Calif/Edison) rounded out a strong defensive day for UMBC picking up 12 digs while the Retrievers out blocked the Bearcats 12-9.

The first set saw both teams trade early runs before Binghamton pulled even at 16-16.  From there, Vandegrift and Megan Groess (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) each picked up two kills apiece as the Retrievers took the initial advantage with a 25-21 set win.

The Bearcast rallied right back to tie things up, breaking an 18-18 tie with a five point run, then taking the set on an attack error, 25-21.

The Retrievers then followed the senior leadership of Kennedy in the third as she picked up five kills as UMBC took the set 25-22.

With the goal in sight, the UMBC took care of business in the fourth, fittingly finishing the match on a block by Kennedy and Ali Loynachan (Whitby, Ontario, Canada/Sinclair), to win the final set 25-14.

The Retrievers now head home for two weekend matches taking on New Hampshire Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. and Hartford on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
