STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMBC
volleyball team lost in five sets to America East rival Stony
Brook, 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. Both
contests between the two schools have gone to five sets with the
Seawolves winning both matchups.
Senior Iman
Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) led the way for the
Retrievers, finishing the match with 17 kills while
sophomore Hannah
Schmidt (Catonsville, Md,/Mount de Sales) recorded 10
kills.
The teams met in Baltimore back on Sept. 23 with the Seawolves
(12-9, 5-2 AE) stealing the win on the road to open both teams'
conference schedules.
The Retrievers (12-10, 2-5 AE) came in to the match trying to
establish their first conference winning streak of the year after
downing Providence 3-0 last Friday.
UMBC came out swinging, taking an early 11-6 lead behind two
kills each from Kennedy and freshman Megan Groess
(Encinitas, Calif/La Costa Canyon). The teams traded off
runs and points throughout the set, but eventually the Retrievers
held off a late Stony Brook comeback to take the first set
25-22.
The second set saw Stony Brook take the initiative, leading 10-6
early on. UMBC got back into the set behind a combined
.259 team hitting percentage, pulling to within one point at
23-22. The two teams then traded points and Stony Brook
leveled the match taking the second set 25-23.
The third set was a back and forth affair with neither team
leading by more than four points. The Seawolves looked
poised to take a 2-1 lead, but the Retrievers pulled off a 5-0 run
to close out the set and take it 25-22 on a kill from
junior Katie
Kelly (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar).
Stony Brook struck back again in the fourth set using s decisive
4-1 swing to once again level the contest.
The fifth set mirrored the rest of the match as neither squad
held an advantage greater than three. After the
Retrievers pulled back to move within one point at 14-13, the
Seawolves won the match on a kill from Alicia Nelson.
Senior setter Allie
Spaay (Kenosha, Wis/Kenosha Tremper) recorded her 11th
double-double of the year finishing the match with 47 assists and
13 digs. Emily
Vandegrift (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) and
sophomore Hallie
Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) also picked up
double digit digs registering 14 and 13 respectively.
The Retrievers have close to a week off before
traveling to take on conference rival Albany next Friday, Oct. 28
beginning at 7:00 p.m. Albany defeated UMBC 3-2
back on Oct. 2 at the RAC Arena.
