Box Score 2 BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team defeated Brown, 3-1,
Saturday in the final day of the Madison Bingaman Memorial
Tournament presented by BWI Holiday Inn at the RAC Arena. Later in
the day, the Retrievers (4-5) dropped a heartbreaker to Sacred
Heart, 3-1.
In the first match of the day, freshman Ali Goc (Oshawa,
Ontario, Canada/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate) recorded her first
double-double of her collegiate career, leading the Retrievers with
17 kills and a .389 hitting percentage as UMBC defeated Brown,
25-27, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23.
The teams were very evenly matched throughout with UMBC hitting
.159 to the Pioneers' .142 and Sacred Heart leading in blocks,
10-9.
Senior Sabrina Hoeks
(Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills, also tallied a double-double
with 12 kills and a game-high 18 digs.
Against Sacred Heart, Hoeks and Goc continued to have an
outstanding tournament with the senior hitting a game-high 19 kills
with 13 digs, while Goc added 16 kills and 16 digs.
Junior Iman Kennedy
(Charlotte, N.C./Independence) hit .333 with eight kills, while
freshman Emily
Witsaman (Medina, Ohio/Medina) led the team with seven total
blocks.
It was a tight contest throughout with Retrievers pulling out
the first set 25-23, before falling 27-25, 30-28 and 26-24 in the
final three sets.
Freshman Rebecca
Garrigues (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) recorded
her first double-double of the season with 35 assists and 10
digs.
For the tournament, Hoeks averaged 3.36 kills and 3.07 digs per
set and finished with 11 service aces. She was named to the
All-Tournament Team.
The Retrievers return to action Friday when they travel to South
Orange, N.J. to face off with Seton Hall at 8 p.m. as part of the
Seton Hall Invitational.
