UMBC Plays Campbell to 1-1 Draw in Women's Soccer

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C.—UMBC (1-2-1) and Campbell (1-2-1) each scored in the final four minutes of regulation, but neither could find the back of the net in overtime and the teams settled for a 1-1 tie Monday evening at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

After playing to a scoreless draw for nearly 87 minutes, the Retrievers finally got on the scoreboard when freshman forward Amy Savage's (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) shot inside the box was saved by Campbell keeper Jamie Panfil, but sophomore forward Sarah Kopytko (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) sent in the rebound from inside the six-yard box at the 86:41 mark. It was Kopytko's first career goal and UMBC's first score in more than 320 minutes of action dating to the first half of the season opener on Aug. 20.

But the Camels found an equalizer with just 25 seconds remaining in regulation, as forward Cissy Nitz's flick off defender Ashley Wagner's long service down the right side found the feet of forward Olga Ekblom, who launched a right-footed shot from a harsh angle into the top of the net on the near-post side.

Both teams managed four shots in the two overtime sessions, but neither could find the game-winner.

Freshman goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/Sir Thomas Aquinas) stopped nine shots and now has 27 saves in her first three collegiate contests. She kept the Retrievers in the game with several difficult saves in the first half and also made a diving stop with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime period. Panfil finished with eight saves for Campbell.

While the Camels outshot the Retrievers, 17-15, for the game, UMBC held a 9-4 advantage in the second half and first overtime period. Freshman midfielder Jessy Brown (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) had a pair of opportunities midway through the second stanza, but Panfil stopped them both.

The Retrievers conclude their four-game road trip on Friday, when they take on George Washington at 4 p.m.
