ALBANY, N.Y. - Sophomore attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored four goals for the second straight game, but the fourth-seeded UMBC women's lacrosse team (11-7) lost to No. 2 Boston University, 11-10, in the America East Championship game Saturday afternoon at Albany's John Fallon Field.
The Terriers held a 3-1 lead after 8:34 of play, but back-to-back free-position goals by junior midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Coady tied the game and sparked a 5-2 UMBC run, and Stodter gave the Retrievers their only lead of the game, 6-5, with 2:16 remaining.
But BU attack McKinley Curro knotted the score at 6-6 with 32 seconds left in the half to send the game to intermission tied for the fifth time.
The Terriers came out strong in the second half, scoring three straight in just 4:30 of action to take a 9-6 lead. Coady pulled the Retrievers to within one with back-to-back goals 11 minutes apart, but UMBC could not complete the comeback, as the teams traded tallies over the next three minutes.
Pappas' goal with 5:50 left made it 11-10, and the Terriers won the ensuing draw and managed to hold onto the ball for the remainder of the game for their sixth straight America East championship.
"No one expected us to be where we were today," first-year head coach Kelly Berger said. "I couldn't have asked for more from them, and they played with everything they had."
Coady, Pappas and junior midfielder Ashley Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) combined to score all 10 of UMBC's goals, as Coady tallied four and Pappas and Stodter each notched a hat trick.
Curro and attack Traci Landy both scored four goals to lead the Terriers.
UMBC goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) made seven saves, while BU keeper Rachel Klein stopped 15 shots for the Terriers.
The Retrievers outshot the Terriers, 29-24, but Boston held a 15-8 advantage on draw controls, including 8-2 in the second half.
After the game, Coady, Pappas and senior defender Sarah Willis (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) were named to the All-Championship Team. Coady scored eight goals in two games, while Pappas had five and Willis had three ground balls, two draw controls and four caused turnovers.
They were joined on the all-tournament squad by Curro, Klein, Landy and midfielder Rachel Collins, as well as Albany's Tricia Primomo and Ashley Ross and New Hampshire's Jess Cassotis and Hayley Rausch. Collins, who won six draw controls against the Retrievers, was named the championship's Most Outstanding Player.
