RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Bria Phillips (Davidsonville, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) tallied a career-high seven points and sophomore attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) added five goals, as the UMBC women's lacrosse team (8-3) defeated Manhattan (1-6) by a score of 20-7 Monday afternoon in the Retrievers' final non-conference game of the season.

The victory is the sixth straight for the Retrievers, their longest winning streak since also taking six in a row from April 17-May 3, 2003. At 8-3, UMBC is off to its best start since 1986, when it won nine of its first 11 games.

Manhattan took a 4-1 lead after just 4:36 of play, but Coady's first goal of the game at the 24:13 mark sparked a 7-0 UMBC run that put the Retrievers on top for good. UMBC led, 10-5, at halftime.

The teams traded goals early in the second stanza, but a 9-0 Retriever spurt that lasted most of the period gave the visitors control of the game. A goal by Manhattan midfielder Helen Kerrisk with three seconds remaining made it 20-7.

Phillips' seven points came on a career-high five goals to go along with two assists, and she was 4-for-4 on free-position attempts, while Coady's five goals were also a career best. In all, nine Retrievers found the back of the net and 11 recorded a point.

The Retrievers' 20 goals were the most they have scored since a 20-6 win over Iona on March 17, 2009.

All three UMBC goalies saw time between the pipes, led by senior Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep), who recorded six saves in nearly 53 minutes. Manhattan keeper Julia DiBernardo stopped 10 shots.

The Retrievers outshot the Jaspers, 36-26, and held a 15-12 advantage on draw controls.

UMBC returns to action on Saturday when it takes on America East rival New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.
