Retrievers Dominate American, 19-2, in Women's Lacrosse

Box Score

BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's lacrosse team (5-3) used a 12-0 run that spanned both halves and lasted more than 35 minutes to take control of the game and defeated visiting American (2-6) by a score of 19-2 Wednesday afternoon at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers completed a perfect 3-0 home stand and are off to their best eight-game start since 1994.

UMBC tallied the first three goals of the game, as junior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) opened the scoring just 2:47 into the contest and junior midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) notched back-to-back goals just 33 seconds apart before American attack Lauren Schoenberger put the Eagles on the board at the 21:43 mark.

But when senior midfielder Amanda Gable (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) converted a Braerman feed with just over 20 minutes to go in the first half, she ignited an 8-0 UMBC run to end the period and send the Retrievers into the intermission with an 11-1 advantage. Seven different players found the back of the net during the stretch.

Sophomore attack Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron/Duquesne) tallied the final goal of the first half and the first of the second stanza, as the Retrievers scored the first four goals of the period to extend their run to 12-0 before American midfielder Amanda Makoid notched her team’s second goal of the game with 13:48 remaining.

The Retrievers, however, would not be stopped, as they bounced back to score the final four goals of the contest.

Pappas was named the America East Player of the Game, as she led UMBC with four goals, while sophomore attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) tallied a game-high five points on three goals and two assists and Braerman added four points on two goals and two helpers. In all, nine Retrievers found the back of the net, with seven scoring multiple times.

Senior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) recorded five saves while also recording four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Kaska Komosinski and Frankie Solomon split time between the pipes for American and combined for 12 saves.

The Retrievers outshot the Eagles, 39-13, and held a 24-12 advantage on ground balls and a 12-11 edge on draw controls.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, when they begin a four-game road trip at Delaware.

Note: The 19 goals are the most scored by UMBC since last March 17, when the Retrievers defeated Iona, 20-6, exactly one year ago.
