BOSTON - The UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving team broke three school records as Retriever teams sit in second place after Day 1 of the 2010 America East Championships in Boston.
On the men's side, Boston University leads with 122 points, followed by UMBC with 111. Binghamton is in third with 106, followed by Stony Brook (60) and Maine (28). On the women's side, New Hampshire leads with 80 points. The Retrievers and Boston U. are tied for second with 64, followed by Vermont (60), Stony Brook (58), Binghamton (52) and Maine (50).
The men's 800 free relay team of junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), freshman Herol Marjak (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Sec Science School) and juniors Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre) and Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) finished first in a school, America East Championship and Boston University Fitness and Recreation Pool record 6:37.08. The time is an NCAA-provisional qualifier.
In the final events of the evening, both 200 medley relay teams broke UMBC records. The women's 200 medley relay team of sophomore Kathryn Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), seniors Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) and Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post) and sophomore Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) finished in third in a UMBC record time of 1:44.53.
The men's 200 medley relay team of seniors Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) broke the school record, earned silver and provisionally qualified for the NCAA's in 1:29.89.
In the 1-meter men's diving, freshman Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass/Chelmsford) finished fourth with 488.0, while fellow freshman Enrique Labourdeth (Rochester, Mi./Stoney Creek) placed eighth with 414.25 and juniorJoe Cabahug (Germantown, Md./Poolesville) ninth. Labourdeth and Cabahug recorded season-best scores.
In the first event of the evening, the women's 800 free relay team of sophomore Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine), freshman Amy Fay (Haverhill, Mass/Haverhill) and seniors Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) and Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) placed third in 7:25.49, just 12 one-hundredths of a second over the school record.
