VESTAL, N.Y.—The UMBC volleyball team won its fourth
consecutive America East contest Friday night and earned its first
ever regular season sweep of Binghamton, defeating the Bearcats
26-24, 25-17 and 25-15. With the win, the Retrievers (9-13, 5-2
America East) move into a tie for first place with Albany, who they
play Sunday at 1 p.m.
"This is a very big win for us," head coach Ian Blanchard said.
"I'm so proud of our ladies. We got contributions from everyone and
played with a lot of energy and composure."
Junior Iman Kennedy
(Charlotte, N.C./Independence) led the Retrievers, hitting .500
with seven kills and no errors, while recording a career-high and
UMBC season-high 10 total blocks. Junior Allie Spaay
(Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) assisted on five blocks and
directed the offense with 29 assists.
Both Retriever outside hitters, senior Sabrina Hoeks
(Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) and freshman Hallie
Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison), recorded
double-doubles. Hoeks tallied 10 kills and 13 digs, while Carter
posted 12 kills and 10 digs.
The Retrievers outhit Binghamton (10-13, 5-3 AEC), .304 to .143
and led the battle it digs, 43-37. Led by Kennedy, UMBC recorded 10
blocks to the Bearcats' four.
UMBC plays at Albany Sunday at 1 p.m.
