Retriever Volleyball Records Fourth Straight Conference Win with Sweep of Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y.—The UMBC volleyball team won its fourth consecutive America East contest Friday night and earned its first ever regular season sweep of Binghamton, defeating the Bearcats 26-24, 25-17 and 25-15. With the win, the Retrievers (9-13, 5-2 America East) move into a tie for first place with Albany, who they play Sunday at 1 p.m.

 

"This is a very big win for us," head coach Ian Blanchard said. "I'm so proud of our ladies. We got contributions from everyone and played with a lot of energy and composure."

 

 Junior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) led the Retrievers, hitting .500 with seven kills and no errors, while recording a career-high and UMBC season-high 10 total blocks. Junior Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) assisted on five blocks and directed the offense with 29 assists.

 

Both Retriever outside hitters, senior Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) and freshman Hallie Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison), recorded double-doubles. Hoeks tallied 10 kills and 13 digs, while Carter posted 12 kills and 10 digs.

 

The Retrievers outhit Binghamton (10-13, 5-3 AEC), .304 to .143 and led the battle it digs, 43-37. Led by Kennedy, UMBC recorded 10 blocks to the Bearcats' four.

 

UMBC plays at Albany Sunday at 1 p.m.
