ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The UMBC men's and
women's swimming and diving teams fell to Navy Friday
afternoon, with the Navy men winning 158-131, while the women won
161-131. Both Retrievers fall to 1-1 on the season.
Sophomore Jennifer
Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross)
won her two individual events, the women's 200-meter
butterfly in 2:17.33 and the 200-meter individual medley in a time
of 2:21.82. On the men's side, freshmanJohan
Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science)
earned two golds, sweeping the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events
in 57.44 and 2:04.31, respectively.
Other individual winners on the night were
senior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City,
Md./Howard) winning the men's 100-meter butterfly in 55.68
and sophomore Abbey McKenney(Wilmington,
Del./Brandywine) taking the women's 100-meter freestyle in
59.19.
In the final women's race of the meet, the 400-meter
freestyle relay of junior Ashley Miller(New
Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach), freshman Erika
Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township),
junior Ashley Sippel (Rockville,
Md./Thomas Wootton) and McKenney finished first in a time of
3:55.08.
The Retrievers return to action Oct. 30 for a dual meet against
America East rival Boston University at 1 p.m.
