Women's Soccer Falls to Stony Brook, 2-0

Box Score

BALTIMOREA pair of Stony Brook goals in a span of four minutes early in the first half sealed a 2-0 win over the UMBC women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at UMBC Soccer Stadium. The Retrievers fall to 2-11-1 overall and 1-4-0 in America East play, while the Seawolves improve to 4-8-2 and 3-1-1.

A fast-break pass from Stony Brook midfielder Taryn Schoenbeck to forward Colleen McKenna found the back of the net when McKenna rocketed a shot from just inside the box under the crossbar to put the Seawolves up, 1-0, late in the ninth minute. Then just 3:41 later, Stony Brook tallied its second goal of the game off a failed clear by a UMBC defender. Midfielder Dominique Adamo fired a shot from just inside the right corner over the head of UMBC freshman goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas). The ball hit off the crossbar and landed in the far corner of the goal.

UMBC's best opportunity came with just over a minute left in play when sophomore forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took a free kick, which Stony Brook keeper Chelsea Morales fumbled back into the box. Junior forward Brooke Piper (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) and senior back Erin Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) each managed shots off the rebound but could not find the back of the net.

Kadet finished with six saves, while Morales stopped five shots for the Seawolves. UMBC outshot Stony Brook, 12-9, and both teams took two corner kicks in the game. Johnson and McKenna were named the America East Players of the Game for their respective teams.

The Retrievers play their last home contest of the year on Thursday when they host America East rival Binghamton at 4 p.m. at UMBC Soccer Stadium. UMBC will honor its three seniors – Johnson, midfielder Sandra Vacarino (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional) and back Christine Sadowski (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) – in a pregame Senior Day ceremony, as the trio will play the final home game of their careers.
