BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team opened up its 2010
America East season with a 3-0 loss to Albany Friday night at the
RAC. The Great Danes (10-5, 1-0 America East) led throughout the
match, defeating the Retrievers (4-11, 0-1), 25-19, 25-18 and
25-18.
Senior Allie Spaay
(Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper), who had not played since the
Towson match on Sept. 4, led the Retrievers with a
double-double, recording 23 assists and 10 digs.
Sophomore Ali Loynachan
(Whitby, Ontario, Canada/Sinclair) paced the Retrievers with six
kills. Freshman Hallie
Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) led the team with 11
digs, while fellow freshman Emily
Witsaman (Medina, Ohio/Medina) had four blocks.
Albany outhit UMBC, .262 to .087 and had 55 digs to the
Retrievers 47. The Great Danes were led by Casey Wright, who hit
.389 with nine kills.
The Retrievers return to action Sunday when they play host to
America East rival Binghamton 2 p.m. at the RAC.
