BALTIMORE—VMI midfielder Amanda Berrios scored less than four minutes into the overtime period to give the Keydets (2-5-0) a 1-0 victory over UMBC (0-6-1) Thursday evening at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
After battling to a scoreless draw for the first 44 minutes, the Retrievers had a pair of opportunities in the final 25 seconds of the first half, but freshman forward Rachel McKee's (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) shot was saved by VMI goalie Heidi Beemer, and the hosts could not capitalize on the ensuing corner kick as time expired.
Both teams had several chances in the second half but could not find the back of the net, sending the contest into overtime.
Early in the 94th minute, the Keydets were awarded a corner kick, which back Alexi Staton sent into the box. Attempting to clear the ball, a UMBC defender headed it to the ground, and Berrios collected the loose ball from the scrum and placed it into the lower-left corner of the net for the game-winner.
UMBC sophomore goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Ijamsville, Md./Northwest) made five saves, while Beemer stopped five shots in the first half and Angela Redmond recorded one save in the final 48:27.
The Keydets outshot the Retrievers, 12-11, and held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.
The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27, when they head north to take on America East rival Maine in the conference opener for both teams.
