Box Score 2 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The UMBC volleyball team split two matches in the final day of the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Terrapin Inviational Saturday, defeating VCU, 3-1, before falling to host Maryland, 3-1. The Retrievers (6-7) finished 2-1 in the tournament, with sophomore Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) was named to the All-Tournament team.
In the first match of the day, the Retrievers only hit .100 in the second, but hit .368 in third and fourth sets on their way to defeating VCU (8-5), 25-22, 18-25, 25-19 and 25-18.
"In the second set, we weren't aggressive enough," the coach said, "but we were able to pass better and that let us run the offense that we want to run and got them in trouble."
Senior Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) led the Retrievers, hitting .423 with 14 kills, while Lang earned a double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs.
"It is a difficult transition moving from the left-side to being a right-side hitting," Blanchard said, "but she played extremely well and was very efficient."
Senior Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) also added a double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs, while senior Pam Jarrett (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) tied for the team lead with 13 digs.
Against Maryland, the Retrievers were out hit .164-.066 and committed 26 errors. The Terps outblocked UMBC 16-9.
Freshman Naomi Bush (Fruitport, Mich./Fruitport) led UMBC with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Lang added nine kills.
Maddi Lee led all hitters with 16 kills for Maryland.
The Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they play at James Madison at 7 p.m.
