BALTIMORE - Senior midfielder Kara Dorr (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) tied her career high with six goals, and freshman attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored a career-best four to lead the UMBC women's lacrosse team (5-4, 1-0 AEC) to an 18-11 victory over America East rival Stony Brook (3-7, 0-1 AEC) in both teams' conference opener.
The Retrievers have now won four of their last five games on the season and have never lost to the Seawolves in six all-time meetings.
UMBC controlled the game from the start, not allowing consecutive Stony Brook goals until midway through the second half.
Leading 4-2, Dorr tallied three straight to spark a 6-1 UMBC run that gave the hosts a 10-3 lead, and the Retrievers held an 11-5 advantage at halftime.
Coady scored the first two goals of the second period, and UMBC scored five of the first six goals in the second stanza to take a game-high 10-goal lead, 16-6, before the Seawolves scored four in a row.
Coady added an assist to match her career high with five points. Dorr also won four draw controls, picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers in the game.
Freshman midfielder Bria Phillips (Davidsonville, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) posted three points on two goals and an assist, while sophomore midfielders Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Ashley Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) also scored twice.
Stony Brook attack Samantha Djaha led the Seawolves with four points on three goals and an assist.
UMBC junior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) recorded five saves, while Mickey Cahill and Jamie Carlson combined to stop 12 shots for Stony Brook.
The Retrievers outshot the Seawolves, 42-22, in the game.
The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, March 24, when they hit the road for the first time this month to take on cross-town rival Johns Hopkins.
