Proctor Records Double-Double, But Men's Basketball Falls at Binghamton

Vestal, N.Y. - Senior forward Darryl Proctor recorded his tenth double-double of the year with 18 points and 14 caroms, but a cold-shooting UMBC men's basketball team fell at Binghamton, 71-51, in their final America East road game of the season.

Binghamton (20-8, 13-3) won for the eighth straight time and clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming America East Tournament. UMBC, which was the last team to defeat the Bearcats, fell to 12-16, 6-9.

The Retrievers can still finish as high as fifth in the league with a win over Albany on Sunday and a New Hampshire loss vs. Stony Brook.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half, as UMBC hit only 8 of 28 from the floor, while Binghamton made just 10 of 32. The Bearcats closed the first half on a 7-0 run, capped by Mayben's three-pointer just before the buzzer as Binghamton led, 27-19 at intermission.

UMBC was able to cut the gap to 36-31 on a Proctor layup at the 15:38 mark of the second half, but the Bearcats scored the next eight points to garner a 44-31 lead two minutes later. The Retrievers were still within 59-49 with 3:52 remaining after a jumper by freshman wing Chauncey Gilliam, but UMBC failed to score on its next three possessions and Binghamton stretched the advantage in the final three minutes.

UMBC hit only 22 of 62 shots from the floor (35.5%), and freshmen Jake Wasco (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Brett Burrier (Westminster, Md.) both fouled out of the contest. Jay Greene (Whitehall, Pa.) was the only other Retriever in double figures with 10 points.

Emanuel Mayben hit eight of 12 shots from the floor and led Binghamton with 18 points.

UMBC will host the Great Danes at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. Seniors Uwem Eshietedoho, Greene and Proctor will be honored in pre-game ceremonies.
