Four Retrievers Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Wins Third Straight; UMBC Vanquishes Hartford, 80-63

West Hartford, Conn. - Senior guard Jay Greene (Whitehall, Pa.) continued his torrid week, leading four Retrievers in double figures with 22 points as UMBC (12-13, 6-7) won its third straight game, an 80-63 triumph over host Hartford (6-21, 2-11).

Senior forward Darryl Proctor (District Heights, Md.) added 20 points, while freshman wing Chauncey Gilliam (Columbia, Md.) scored 18 as UMBC won for the first time after five setbacks at Hartford.

Greene hit five of six shots from behind the arc and seven of nine from the free throw line, after his 36-point effort in the 81-76 win over New Hampshire on Feb. 10.

Proctor hit the 1,000-point mark while at UMBC, and is the fastest in school history to reach that plateau, achieving it in 58 games. He surpassed 1,800 career points (1,801) and needs five more to amass the most points for a player who has competed at UMBC (two seasons).

UMBC led, 34-30 at halftime, and after an exchange of three-point field goals to start the second half, the Retrievers took control with a 13-2 run to lead, 50-35 with 14:40 remaining. The Hawks would whittle the deficit to nine points on two occasions, but Greene’s long three with 7:44 to play restored the lead to 14 points at 64-50 and the advantage remaining in double figures the rest of the way.

Gilliam hit four of five shots in the second half, posting 14 of his 18 points after intermission. He also led the Retrievers with seven rebounds.

Hartford forward David Bookman led the hosts with 17 points.

UMBC hit 23 of 45 shots from the floor (51.1%), seven of 10 from behind the arc and 27 of 37 (73.0%) from the charity stripe. UH was just 21 of 58 (36.2%) from the floor  and six of 23 from behind the arc.

The Retrievers return home to face Vermont at the RAC Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
