UMBC Volleyball Falls to Albany, 3-1, Friday Night

Box Score

BALTIMORE - The UMBC volleyball team fell to America East foe Albany, 3-1, Friday night at the RAC Arena. With the loss, the Retrievers drop to 13-10 on the season and 5-3 in America East play, while the Great Danes improve to 18-8 and 8-0 in conference action.

In a match much more competitive than Albany’s 3-0 win on Oct. 18 in Albany, N.Y., the Retrievers hit .278 to win the second set, but the Great Danes took the match, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-21.

"I thought we put forth a strong effort and definitely made some strides," head coach Ian Blanchard said, "but we need to be more consistent in putting the ball away."

Freshman Naomi Bush (Fruitport, Mich./Fruitport) led the Retrievers, hitting .273 with 13 kills, while sophomore Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) had a team-high 14 kills and earned 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.

Senior Pam Jarrett (Lincloln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) had a game-high 23 digs, while fellow senior Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 23 assists and 14 digs.

After only hitting .088 in the first set and seeing Albany jump out to a 10-2 lead in the second, the Retrievers went on a 23-12 run to tie the match at one. The third set was much like the first, with UMBC only hitting .091 and the fourth set was tied at 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21, but the Great Danes won the final four points to win the match.

The Retrievers return to action tomorrow night for Senior Night when they take on Binghamton at 6 p.m. at the RAC.
