BALTIMORE--Fresh off a record-setting victory over UMES, the UMBC women's basketball team hits the road for the first time when it travels to St. Joseph's Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC is coming off a record-setting 102-65 victory against in-state rival UMES on Sunday. The 102 points set a new school mark in the Division I era, as UMBC had not scored 100 points in a game since 1985. Five Retrievers scored in double figures for the first time in nearly three years, led by sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski's game-high 22 points. She finished just three assists shy of a triple-double, posting career highs in rebounds (14) and helpers (7), while junior forward Meghan Colabella notched her second straight double-double to start the season with 15 points and 10 boards. Senior guard Carlee Cassidy poured in 18 points, and the trio combined to make 12 three-pointers, as UMBC tied the school record for triples in a game with 14. Cassidy moved into sixth place on UMBC's all-time scoring list with 1,255 career points.
HAWK UPDATE: St. Joseph's is 0-2 on the season after losses to Providence and UMBC's America East rival New Hampshire to open the 2009-10 campaign. Forward Brittany Ford leads the Hawks with 13.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg. She scored a team-best 14 points against Providence on Sunday. St. Joseph's has been outscored by 19.5 ppg in its first two contests, shooting just 28.8 percent from the floor. The Hawks were picked to finish ninth out of 14 teams in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, and Ford was named to the A-10 preseason all-conference third team.
Who's Up Next: The Retrievers continue their three-game road trip when they take on cross-town rival Towson on Tuesday. UMBC is 12-31 all-time against the Tigers in the oldest and longest-standing rivalry in program history. The teams have met in 10 of the last 11 seasons, and UMBC has won six times during that stretch, including a thrilling 69-68 victory at the RAC last season.
Inside the Series: Saturday's game marks the third all-time meeting between UMBC and St. Joseph's, and the Hawks hold a 2-0 series advantage. The first meeting occurred on Dec. 29, 1989, a 91-55 victory for the St. Joseph's at the Maryland Invitational. UMBC is 0-1 all-time on the Hawks' home court.
In the teams' last meeting, Dec. 28, 2002, at the St. Joseph's Hawk Classic, the Hawks defeated the Retrievers, 66-61, in overtime in UMBC head coach Phil Stern's inaugural season at the Retriever helm. UMBC was led by Shalayna Johnson's 18 points and Jessie Brown's 16, while Irina Krasnoshiok led three Hawks in double figures with 18 points. Erin Brady scored eight of her 17 points in the extra period, and she added seven rebounds and seven assists.
