Women's Swimming and Diving Falls to Maryland and Towson Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) placed first in three individual events and one relay as the UMBC men's swimming and diving team defeated Maryland and Towson by a score of 152-148 and 223-73, respectively, Saturday in College Park, Md. The women's team was defeated by the Terps and the Tigers by a score of 217-83 and 214.5-85.5, respectively.

Senior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) set UMBC season- best marks in the 200 breast (2:23.11) and the 200 IM (2:09.14), both of which she placed third.

Other team season-best times were set by senior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee ), who finished second in the 200 free in 1:51.41, and junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep), who touched second in the 1,000 free in 10:19.46.

On the men's side, Mattingly set UMBC season-best times in the 100 breast (57.73), 200 breast (2:07.95) and 200 IM (1:52.71). The 200 IM time was over four a half seconds faster than his previous best time this year.

Senior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy), Mattingly, junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) claimed first in a time of 1:34.18, while in the final event of the meet, junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel), Vonder Haar, freshman Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and Jason Mattingly touched first in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:05.26.

Junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) took first in two events, the 200 free (1:42.18) and the 100 free (46.41), while earning second in the 50 free in a time of 21.17. All three were UMBC season-best times.

Other Retrievers swimming team season-best times were Reitz, who finished second in the 200 fly in 1:53.20 and the 100 fly in 50.68, and sophomore Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), who touched second in the 200 back in a time of 1:51.83.

The Retrievers return to action next weekend as they take part in the George Mason Patriot Invitational that takes place Friday through Sunday.
