BALTIMORE - The UMBC swimming and diving teams were swept by Navy Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium. The men lost 156-133, while the women fell 166-134. Both teams dropped to 1-1 on the season.
Three seniors, Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School), Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post) and Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) all won individual events. Cantwell took the 100 breast in 1:05.47, Esposito the 200 fly in 2:06.47 and Kaplanova claiming the 200 IM in 2:11.34.
Junior Amanda Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) took second in both diving events, scoring 197.55 on the 1-meter and 193.13 on the 3-meter.
On the men's side, senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won the 100 breast in a time of 58.58, while junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) claimed the 100 free in the 47.38. UMBC's only other individual winner was sophomore Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), who won the 200 back in a time of 1:52.33.
The Retrievers started off the match on the right foot, with the team of freshman Sandy Haibel (Rockville, Md/Richard Montgomery), Mattingly, junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and freshman Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) winning the 200 medley relay in 1:35.17.
The Retrievers return to action Nov. 14 when they take on local rivals Maryland and Towson in College Park, Md. at 1 p.m.
