LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for 17 first place finishes as the Retrievers swept Rider Saturday in Lawrenceville, N.J. The men's team won 163-133, while the women's team won 165-135.
The 400 free relay team of sophomores Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach), Ashley Sippel (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton) and Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and freshman Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) won in a Coppola pool record time of 3:36.94.
The Retrievers had three two-event winners in seniors Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) and Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) and junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep).
Sherman swept the fly events in times of 58.24 and 2:07.32, while Kaplanova won the 200 breast in 2:26.77 and the 200 IM in 2:12.34. Godwin placed first in the 500 and 1,000 free events times of 5:09.29 and 10:29.68, respectively.
On the men's side, senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won the 100 breast in 58.67 and the 200 IM in 1:57.38, while being a part of the 200 medley relay team with junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and freshmen Sandy Haibel (Rockville, Md/Richard Montgomery) and Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) that won in a time of 1:35.80.
Reitz was a two-event winner in the 200 fly in 1:54.70 and the 100 fly in 51.42 along with junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) in the 100 and 200 free events in times of 47.84 and 1:45.36, respectively.
Jones, senior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and freshmen Herol Marjak (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Sec Science School) and Gallagher won the 400 free relay in 3:12.52, while sophomores Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) and John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) claimed the 200 back and 200 breast, respectively.
The Retrievers return to action next Saturday when they host Navy. The men's meet starts at noon, while the women's action begins at 2 p.m.
