The UMBC men's swimming and diving team earned a rare tie against the East Carolina Pirates 149-149 Saturday, while the women's team dropped a 191-103 decision.
Senior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) won three individual events including the 100, 200 and 500 free events. Sophomore Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) was also a multiple event winner, sweeping the fly events with a 1:51.53 in 200 and a 50.45 in the 100. Reitz also took the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:54.74.
Junior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won the 100 breast in 59.36, while freshman Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) won the 200 back in 1:53.39. Junior Matt Hamel (Jessup, Md./Glenelg Country School) won the 3-meter diving with a score of 212.48.
On the women's side, junior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) won the 200 individual medley in 2:11.04.
The Retrievers return to action Saturday for their final home meet of the year against Marist at noon.
