Albany, N.Y.-- The UMBC volleyball team lost a heart-breaking five-set loss to Binghamton in the semifinals of the America East Championship. The Retrievers came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits, but could not overcome a -0.080 hitting percentage in the fifth set, as the Bearcats moved on to the final with a 25-15, 17-25, 25-18, 14-25, 15-10 win.
Three Retrievers earned double-doubles led by junior Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) with 17 kills and 13 digs. Oscars was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts. Junior Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba,Canada/Glenlawn) had 49 assists and 11 digs, while freshman Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) earned 14 kills and 15 digs.
In the first set, the Retrievers came out flat, hitting just .054 as the Bearcats hit .364 to win 25-15. UMBC bounced back in the second, hitting .517 with 17 kills against only two errors, to tie the match, 25-17.
The third set was much like the first, with the Bearcats holding the Retrievers to a .000 hitting percentage. UMBC hit .375 in the fourth with 14 kills and only four errors to send the match to a fifth game, 25-14.
In the decisive set, the Retrievers hit eight errors, while the Bearcats only hit three and jumped out to a 7-1 lead on their way to win 15-10.
