Albany, N.Y.-- The UMBC volleyball team suffered its second consecutive defeat to Albany Sunday afternoon, 3-1, in Albany, N.Y. With the loss, the Retrievers drop to 15-9 and 4-3 in America East play on the season, while the Great Danes improve to 15-8 and 7-0 in conference action.
The Retrievers were out-served and out-blocked by the Great Danes for the second match in a row. Albany defeated UMBC, 3-0, Friday night at the RAC Arena. In this match, the Great Danes had three more aces, five fewer service errors and three more blocks.
After falling behind two sets to none, the Retrievers hit .347 with 20 kills against only three errors to win the third, 25-15. They had no answer for the Great Danes in the fourth however, with Albany taking advantage of seven UMBC hitting errors, to win 25-20.
The Retrievers were once again led by redshirt freshman Sarah Hill (Richmond, Va./L.C. Bird), who hit an outstanding .444 with a season-best 15 kills and only three errors.
Three UMBC players recorded double-doubles with junior Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) earning 40 assists and 11 digs in just the final three sets, junior Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) adding her fourth of the season with a game high 16 kills and 16 digs and freshman Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) earning her seventh of the season with 13 kills and 16 digs.
Five Retrievers had double-digit digs, led by junior Sarah Ball (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Sisler), who had a game-high 22.
UMBC returns to action Friday night when they travel to Orono, Maine for another crucial America East matchup against Maine at 5 p.m.
