Retriever Volleyball Drops Tough Four-set Match to Binghamton Sunday

BALTIMORE-- The UMBC volleyball team lost a tough four-set match to Binghamton Sunday afternoon at the RAC, snapping a six-match winning streak. The loss dropped the Retrievers to 15-7, 4-1 in America East play, while the Bearcats improved to 10-12 and 5-1 in conference action.

"We played like a young team," said head coach Ian Blanchard. "One of the things that makes Binghamton such a hard team to beat is they minimize their mistakes, and we didn't do that today."

The entire match was close, with the Bearcats coming out on top 24-26, 25-21, 25-23 and 27-25. The Retrievers outhit Binghamton .201 to .177 and recorded 13 blocks to the Bearcats’ 9.5, but 11 serving errors cost UMBC in the end.

"It comes down to serving and passing," said Blanchard. "They had two more aces then us, we had three more errors they did and we lost the last two sets by a total of four points. That was the difference."

Sophomore Bridget Scheetz (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) led the Retrievers, hitting 14 kills against only three errors, while adding four assisted blocks. She now has 193 for her career, moving her into fourth place all-time in UMBC history.

Junior Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) earned her third double-double of the season with 14 kills and 13 digs. In the first set, Oscars moved into ninth place by herself on the all-time kills list at UMBC and now has 926 in less than three full seasons.

Freshman Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) added her sixth double-double of the year, with 14 kills and 11 digs. Junior Pam Jarrett (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) led UMBC with 15 digs.

The Retrievers return to action Friday when they face first-place Albany at the RAC at 7 p.m.
