BALTIMORE-Elon forward Stacie Ledford found the back of the net less than two minutes into overtime to give the Phoenix (1-1-0) a 2-1 victory over the UMBC women's soccer team (0-2-0) Sunday afternoon at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

The Retrievers outshot the Phoenix, 21-5, with Elon goalkeeper Lizz Johnson making 11 saves and surviving eight UMBC corner kicks.

UMBC's offense dominated possession, and its defense was barely letting Elon advance the ball on net, with senior defender Alexis Rogowsky and freshman defenders Erin Johnson, Christine Sadowski, Morgan Warrington all making key tackles during the first half.

Elon's Katie Persichini opened the scoring on the Phoenix's first shot of the game in the 43rd minute off a pass from forward Susannah Gianakos, who had received the ball back after firing one of Elon's four corners. At that point, UMBC had outshot the Phoenix 12-1.

In the second half, UMBC kept piling on the pressure, and freshman forward Ashley Singer finally broke through with a long range shot from the right side, beating Johnson to the top left corner of the net for her first career goal.

Both teams had excellent chances late in regulation. UMBC freshman forward Sandra Vacarino missed scoring her second goal of the weekend, as her shot in the 87th minute sailed just over the crossbar. A minute later, junior goalkeeper Catie Bukowski dived to her right to make one of her three saves to stop a long shot from Ledford as the ball curled away from her.

The game went into overtime, and Ledford quickly took the ball from midfield, dribbled down the right side and fired in a long-range shot for the game-winner.

UMBC's next game is at Drexel on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.
