UMBC Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Towson, 5-1

BALTIMORE- Towson's Kaitlyn Zamroz scored two goals, with the first coming in the second minute, to lead the Tigers to a 5-1 victory over UMBC in both teams' season opener at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

The Tigers outshot the Retrievers, 19-16, including 12-8 in the second half, and did not let up the pressure on the UMBC defense to give head coach Greg Paytner his first career victory.

In the second minute, Brittany Hadaway crossed the ball from the right side, and it bounced through the defense and found Zamroz with an empty net in front of her.

UMBC did not seem rattled by Towson's quick start and looked to pull even just a couple minutes later when freshman forward Ashley Singer's header went just wide. The Retrievers kept the pressure on, with senior forward Jessica Young adding four shots, but were unable to pull even going into halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers found the net when Zamroz beat two defenders and rifled a shot in the right lower corner of the net just five minutes after the intermission.

Sophomore midfielder Katie McKay almost put the Retrievers on the board in the 59th minute with header off a corner from freshman midfielder Elyse Bilardo, but Tigers' goalkeeper Brandi Daniels made a diving stop.

Marissa Gross made it 3-0 after a nice cross from Erica Marshall on the left sideline. Rosie Goldberg scored to make it 4-0 when she attempted a cross that found the top corner of the goal just past the outstretched hands of UMBC junior goalie Christine Bacinski.

The Retrievers showed no sign of giving up when Young delivered a slick pass through two defenders to freshman forward Sandra Vacarino, who fired a shot past Daniels in the 78th minute for her first career goal.

As time was winding down, Towson forward Samantha Young scored with seconds to go after a poor clearance by the UMBC defense.

Bacinski posted seven saves in 90 minutes, while Daniels had six in 81:10 before being relieved by Kendie Bauer.

The Retrievers return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Elon at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
