UMBC, Longwood Tie 2-2 in Women's Soccer Action

-Junior forward Jessica Young and senior midfielder Mary Hearin each scored for the Retrievers but the game was called in the 83rd minute due to persistent lightning, as the UMBC women's soccer team (1-1-1) settled for a 2-2 tie with host Longwood (1-1-1) Wednesday evening.

As in both of the Retrievers' first two games of the season, the teams battled to a scoreless tie after one period of play. But Young scored on a penalty kick just three and a half minutes into the second half to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. Young's goal is her team-best second of the season and moves her into a tie for sixth place all-time at UMBC with 20 career goals.

Longwood knotted it up at 1-1 about 10 minutes later with an own-goal on a ball that deflected off the leg of a UMBC defender on a crossing attempt by Lancer senior Tiffany Crane.

The Lancers went ahead just minutes later, at 63:54, as Vanessa Congdon finished into the right side of an open net on a feed from Crane on the left side. But the Retrievers retied the game at 2-2 when Hearin scored unassisted on a loose ball in the box at 71:42.

The game ended in a draw when severe weather moved into the area. The teams waited out a 45-minute delay, but the game was called when there was no sign of the storm clearing.

UMBC sophomore goalie Catie Bukowski recorded nine saves, while Longwood keeper Anne Whitmore stopped three shots.

The Lancers out-shot the Retrievers, 16-9, and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action Sunday, Sept. 3, as they head to College Park, Md., to take on 25th-ranked Maryland.
