Retrievers Drop Home Opener to Coppin State, 59-48, in Women's Basketball Action

Baltimore-Freshman guard Carlee Cassidy scored 17 points, but the UMBC women's basketball team (0-2) fell to Coppin State (1-1) by a score of 59-48 Tuesday evening in the Retrievers' home opener at RAC Arena.

The Eagles took an early 10-6 lead with 13:48 remaining in the first half, but the Retrievers went on a 13-4 run, with by 10 points from Cassidy, to jump out in front, 19-14, with seven minutes to go.

Coppin State chipped away and took the lead for good on a layup by Talia Sutton with 21 seconds remaining in the first period. The Retrievers went into halftime trailing, 25-24.

The Eagles came out shooting in the second half with a 12-4 run over the first 6:12 of play that included four three-pointers by Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Rashida Suber.

The Retrievers pulled to within one point at the 7:19 mark with a 9-2 run and stayed close for much of the remainder of the game. The Eagles held a 49-48 advantage with just 3:03 to go but scored the final 10 points of the game for the 59-48 victory.

Cassidy led UMBC with 17 points off the bench, shooting 6-for-11 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from long distance. Senior point guard Brittnie Hughes added 11 points, while senior forward Sharri Rohde posted nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Suber led all scorers with 25 points, shooting 8-for-17 from the floor, including 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Sutton posted a double-double for the Eagles with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Retrievers shot just 35.9 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from three-point range, while Coppin State connected on 40 percent of its field goal attempts and 62.5 percent of three-pointers. The Eagles out-rebounded UMBC, 36-31.

The Retrievers return to action Friday, Nov. 17, when they host Baltimore rival Loyola at 7 p.m. at UMBC RAC Arena.
