UMBC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROLLS PAST STONY BROOK, 70-48

Stony Brook, N.Y. – The UMBC women's basketball team (10-8, 2-5 AE) won their second straight game with a 70-48 victory over Stony Brook (11-7, 4-3 AE) in America East women's basketball action on Sunday at the Stony Brook Sports Complex. The Retrievers, who had not had a player record a double-double all season, recorded two double-doubles as Sharri Rohde (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) scored 20 points with 11 rebounds while Matea Pender (Sibinek, Croatia/The Croatian National Team) tallied 19 points with 10 rebounds. Brittnie Hughes (Roanoke, Va./Northside) scored 19 points as well to tie her career high.

UMBC ran out ahead early, taking a 14-4 lead and continued to add to their lead in the first half, moving to an 18-point advantage at 36-18 at half time as Hughes hit two free throws with four seconds remaining. UMBC controlled Mykeema Ford and Jessica Smith, who entered the game as the top scoring duo in the conference. UMBC's active zone kept four scoreless in the first half and Smith to five points.

UMBC built its largest lead at 28 points with 3:34 to play in the game as Hughes drained two more free throws. Hughes was 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the game. UMBC for the game shot 56.8 percent from the field, making 25-of-44 attempts. Rohde was 9-of-10 from the field while Pender shot 8-for-14 and 3-for-7 outside the arc.

Kelly Watson led Stony Brook off the bench, scoring 15 points. Smith ended with seven points while Ford scored five in the game. Stony Brook shot 28.6 percent from the field, going 16-for-56.

UMBC recorded its 10th win of the season reaching 10 wins for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The Retrievers return to action against Binghamton on Wednesday, February 1 at 7 p.m. in RAC Arena.
