UMBC WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS OVERTIME HEARTBREAKER TO RADFORD, 1-0

-Radford midfielder Lisa Channon scored from 12 yards out 8:41 seconds into overtime to give the Highlanders (1-2-0) a 1-0 win over the UMBC women's soccer team (1-3-0) Sunday afternoon.

Retriever freshman goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) matched a career high with eight saves, as Radford out-shot UMBC 17-10. The Retrievers were unable to get a shot off in the overtime period. The Highlanders also had a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks. Radford played a player short for the final 14 minutes of the game. Radford goalkeeper Annaliese Yoder tallied four saves.

Radford forward McKenzie Vergara and midfielder Megan Horan were credited with assists on the game-winning goal, which was Channon's second score of the season. Vergara took a pass down the sideline from Horan, dribbled up the field and sent a cross to Channon, who put it past Bacinski at the 98:41 mark.

With back-and-forth play for most of the match, each team stepped it up in the second half, generating golden scoring opportunities. In the 80th minute, the Retrievers forced a Highlander turnover deep in their half of the field. UMBC had a three-on-one, leaving junior forward Kelly Fiorani (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) all alone in front of the goal, but her chip sailed over the crossbar.

The Retrievers return home next weekend to host the UMBC Invitational. UMBC will take on St. Peter's at 7:30 p.m. at UMBC Stadium in the second game of the tournament on Friday, Sept. 9, while Mount St. Mary's faces High Point at 5 p.m. The invitational concludes Sunday, Sept. 11, as St. Peter's takes on High Point at 5 p.m., while the Retrievers face Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
