McELLIGOTT SETS UMBC DIVISION I GOALS RECORD IN 10-0 ROUT OF NJIT

UMBC (1-0-0) senior forward Derek McElligott (Baltimore, MD/Greater Grace Academy) scored three goals and became the Retrievers' all-time leading goal scorer their Division I history in a 10-0 rout of New Jersey Institute of Technology (0-2-0) in the nightcap of the Greene Turtle/adidas Kick Off at UMBC.

McElligott got UMBC on the board early, tapping in a short cross from Kevin Mezzadra at the 17:23 mark. After freshman Matt Curran (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) scored goals at 29:58 and 37:16, McElligott converted Curran's lead pass for a 4-0 Retriever advantage at 39:19, and completed the hat trick on a direct kick at 43:13.

The 10 goals scored by UMBC is the most since tallying 10 vs. The Citadel in 1999. Junior Powell Cucchiella (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) added a goal and four assists and Curran tallied 2 goals and an assist in his debut. Cucchiella's four assists ties a 14-year old school record set by John Samartzis in 1990.
