WOMEN'S SOCCER CLAIMS FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON WITH 3-2 OVERTIME WIN AGAINST MARIST

Sophomore Betsy Day (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester) scored her first goal of the season 39 seconds into overtime to lead UMBC (1-1) to a 3-2 win over Marist (0-3) this afternoon at the UMBC Soccer Stadium. After the Retrievers gained possession of the ball in overtime, Day took control from the left side and launched a shot that hit the top right corner of the post before dribbling in past Marist goalkeeper Danielle Cibelli (Paramus, N.J./Paramus).

In the game, the Red Foxes took an early lead when sophomore Jenna McCrory (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown), who took the team's first shot at 9:46, was able to take a feed from junior Elizabeth Egan (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and get the ball over the hands of Retriever goalkeeper Robin Babaris (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Sir Oliver Mowat). However, UMBC did not waste time, as freshman J.J. Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone), took a long pass from sophomore Mary Hearin (North Potomac, Md./Watkins Mill), and scored at the 10:50 mark. Less than seven minutes later, Young gave UMBC the lead, when she broke away from all defenders to give the Retrievers a 2-1 advantage at the half.

Following Young's second goal, neither team would score for the next 70:42, until Marist junior Ashley Johnson (Avalon, N.J./Rider) was able to come away with the ball while Babaris was away from the net to tie the game at two apiece.

However, the score would remain locked for just over two minutes, as Day converted the first play of the overtime period into the first win of the season for the Retrievers.

For the game, UMBC outshot Marist 15-10, while the Red Foxes had a 5-2 edge on corner kicks. In the net, Babaris made five saves for UMBC, while Cibelli made seven for the visitors.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, September 5, when they visit Old Dominion for a non-conference game at 1 p.m.
