WOMEN'S SOCCER WINS THIRD STRAIGHT WITH SHUTOUT OF ALBANY, 4-0

Baltimore, Md. – Four different Retrievers scored as the UMBC women's soccer team improved to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the America East Conference by defeating Albany (2-14, 0-5 America East) by a score of 4-0 this afternoon at the UMBC Soccer Stadium.

UMBC got on the board just 3:18 into the game when sophomore Mary Hearin (North Potomac, Md./Watkins Mill) served the ball to freshman Kersha Walker (Burlington, Ont./St. Thomas Aquinas), who had an open shot seven yards from the Albany net. Just over three minutes later, the Retrievers would strike again. This time, freshman J.J. Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) centered a pass from the right side to Walker, who then fed teammate Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) for the goal. The score remained 2-0 at the break.

In the second stanza, UMBC extended their lead to 3-0 at 48:33 when Young broke away and shot the ball into the lower left corner of the net, past Albany goalkeeper Catherine Nicholson. The Retrievers would add another tally late in the game, when they were awarded a penalty kick, which J.J. Golibart (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) converted at 88:47.

For the game, UMBC outshot the Great Danes, 20-6, and had more corner opportunities, 6-0. Nicholson made nine saves for Albany, while UMBC keeper Robin Babaris (Toronto, Ont./Sir Oliver Mowat) stopped two.

The Retriever women's soccer team returns to action on Friday, October 22, when they travel to Vermont for an America East Conference game beginning at 4 p.m.
