Norfolk, VA - The UMBC men's soccer teams' six-game unbeaten streak came to an end, as the 4th-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs defeated the visiting Retrievers, 2-0, before 538 fans.
ODU has recorded seven straight shutouts to open the season, and has outscored its opponents, 17-0. They are the lone Division I team in the nation to have not allowed a goal. But the Retrievers outshot ODU, 7-5, in the first half and forced ODU netminder Sam Cameron to make five first half saves. Moreover, ODU defender Trevor McEachron made a brilliant stop, heading the ball away from danger, and Cameron made several brilliant saves as well. But the Monarchs got on the board at the 37:41 mark as Brian Cvilikas converted a Ryan Sniegowski pass to give ODU the halftime edge.
ODU's Kevin McMenamin added an insurance goal off a deflection at the 76:13 mark. ODU outshot UMBC, 15-12, and Retriever netminder Andy Marchica made 8 saves. UMBC is now 4-1-2 on the season and will open the America East season at pre-season favorite Northeastern on Saturday.
