UMBC improved to 4-0-1 on the season as the Retriever men's soccer team defeated George Washington (1-3-0), 3-2 in overtime this afternoon at Washington, D.C.
Danny Mongello's cross, which was inadvertently redirected by a defender into the net, proved to be the game winner 3:28 into the overtime period.
The two squads battled to a stalemate in the first half and took a scoreless tie into the break. However, the Retrievers came out firing in the second period, scoring two quick goals in the first 12 minutes. Sophomore Matt McGowan headed home a corner kick from Michael Joseph in the 53rd minute, while freshman Kevin Mezzadra gave the Retrievers a 2-0 edge four minutes later, after breaking free at the top of the box and sending a rocket to the left corner of the goal.
The Colonials evened the score at two apiece with goals from sophomore Frank Ambrosio and senior Arnar Johannsson. GW was unable to carry that momentum over to the extra period, as UMBC sealed the victory with Mongello's score.
