SHALAYNA JOHNSON SCORES A SCHOOL-RECORD 37; WOMEN'S HOOPS SHOCKS QUINNIPIAC

Baltimore, MD - - -UMBC senior guard Shalayna Johnson scored 25 of her school-record 37 points in the second half as UMBC upset Quinnipiac, 58-47 at the Retriever Activities Center on Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers improved to 12-14 (9-8 NEC) and the Bobcats fell to 17-9 (13-4 NEC).

UMBC trailed 35-24 with 16:07 before rallying to take their first lead of the second half on a jumper by senior forward Millette Green with 3:37 remaining. The field goal which put UMBC ahead 45-44, was part of a 21-9 run. Sara Esidore converted two free throws on the next possession to give the Bobcats their final lead of the game at 45-44 with 3:23 remaining. However, Johnson put UMBC on top for good at 47-45, as she drained a three-pointer from the right wing with 3:06 remaining , and then hit another tri-fecta to give UMBC a 50-45 advantage with 1:59 remaining. The two field goal initiated a 14-2 run by the Retrievers to close out the contest. Johnson scored 8 points during the run.

UMBC trailed 26-19 at halftime as they managed to shoot just thirty-five percent from the floor. The Retrievers led 19-16 with 5:03 remaining, but the Braves scored the last ten points of the stanza to take the lead.

Quinnipiac outscored UMBC, 9-5 over the first 3:53 of the second half to grab their largest lead of the game at 35-24 at the 16:07 mark.

Johnson established the school-mark by connecting on 13 of her 27 field goal attempts, including 5 of 12 from three-point range and 6-for-7 from the line. In addition to the 37 points, Johnson pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds to record her first-ever "double-double." She had previously tied the school-record with 36 points against Robert Morris on January 11.

In addition to Johnson's heroics, Retrievers' senior guard Jessie Brown became UMBC's all-time leader in assists and now has 486 helpers.

Junior forward Esidore led Quinnipiac with 18 points and junior center Ashlee Kelly added 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
