New Britain, CT--The Retriever women's basketball team won for the third time in its last four outings, as they defeated Central Connecticut, 65-47, in a key NEC game. The Retrievers improve to 9-12 overall, 6-6 in the confeence, while CCSU falls to 6-15, 5-6 NEC.
UMBC controlled much of the action, building a 33-21 halftime lead and expanded that advantage to 50-30 with 10:40 to play. Christine Catalanotto, Jessie Brown and Mariana Santos each hit a three-point goal in a span of 2:30 to key the surge. Central made a brief rally to cut the lead to 54-41 with 5:30 to play, but came no closer. UMBC shot a solid 47% from the floor for the game and held their hosts to 35% shooting.
Senior guard Shalayna Johnson led a balanced attack with 16 points, followed by Christine Catalanotto, who contributed 13 and Jessie Brown, who added 12 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.
UMBC will play four of its final six games at the RAC Arena as they fight for positioning in the league race.
