Burlington, VT--Junior forward Derek McElligott scored his 13th goal of the season and sophomore fullback Marcus Gross tacked on a penalty kick as UMBC (6-1-5, 2-0-3) defeated Vermont (1-7-4, 0-2-1), 2-0, in America East play.
The Retrievers extended their unbeaten streak to five straight (2-0-3) and remained unbeaten in AEC play. Vermont had not lost a home game in their last 15 outings.
McElligott extended his goal streak to five straight games when he converted at the 18:30 mark. He one-timed Matt McGowan's cross from the left side to give UMBC the early 1-0 advantage.
UMBC drew its first penalty kick of the season at the 50:54 mark, and Gross converted to give the Retrievers an insurance tally. UMBC outshot UV, 17-11, and Retriever netminder Andy Marchica only needed to make one save to earn his sixth shutout of the campaign.
