Host St. Francis University of Pennsylvania hit 53% from the floor and defeated UMBC, 85-64, in an NEC women's basketball contest in Loretto, PA. The Red Flash improves to 6-5 overall, 2-0 in league play, while the Retrievers fall to 3-8, 0-2.
St. Francis jumped out to a 40-26 halftime lead, and scored the first nine points of the second half to build a 23-point advantage. But UMBC would rally, outscoring the defending NEC champs, 12-2, to cut the deficit to 51-38 with 13:10 to play. But the hosts scored the next seven points and crused to the league win.
Three players finished in double figures for UMBC. Jessie Brown led the Retrievers with 18 point, followed by Shalayna Johnson with 16 and Milette Green with 12. Green led UMBC with 7 rebounds, but the bigger Red Flash squad outboarded UMBC, 38-23. St. Francis buried 12 of 25 from behind the arc in the game.
UMBC takes on NEC foe Robert Morris on Saturday.
