LOYOLA SURVIVES RETRIEVER COMEBACK, WINS 3-2 IN OVERTIME IN BATTLE OF BALTIMORE SOCCER

Loyola senior forward Miguel Abreu scored 3:48 into overtime as 13th-ranked Loyola (2-0) survived a major upset bid by UMBC (1-2), and triumphed, 3-2, in the nightcap of the Battle of Baltimore Tournament. In the opener, Towson senior forward Machel Millwood scored at the 68:07 mark as Towson (2-1) defeated Navy (2-1), in the opener. The Tigers will face the Greyhounds in Sunday's title game at 4:30 p.m., while UMBC faces the Midshipmen at 2:00 p.m.

It was another day of frustration for UMBC, which lost its second overtime game in three outings this season, fell to 0-17-2 vs. Loyola, and fell in a game they took over in the second half. Loyola's Juliano Adriano de Oliviera and Bill Law scored in the first half to put the Greyhounds up, 2-0, at intermission.

But UMBC quickly equalized the game on sizzling shots by Michael Joseph and Marco Angelini 3:07 apart in the early stages of the second half. The Retrievers outshot Loyola, 16-9 through regulation, but Abreu, who scored the game-winner in overtime vs. UMBC two seasons ago, received a cross field pass from Vinnie Piscopo and beat UMBC netminder Brian Rowland from fifteen yards away just inside the far left pipe.

Towson and Navy played a fairly even game, with the Tigers outshooting the Mids, 12-11, but neither team had great scoring chances until late in the action. Millwood scored the game-winner as he headed in a served by Maeson Ethard from about 9 yards out. Towson netminder Andy Hicks recorded four saves to notch the shutout.
