Howard University scored with 16 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, then got the game-winner five minutes into overtime as the host Bison (1-5) upset UMBC (3-4), 2-1, in overtime in Washington, DC.
Michael Joseph had scored his third goal of the season to give UMBC an early lead at the 14:40 mark. The Retrievers looked to have their third consecutive win and shutout, but a desperation Howard kick into the box was mishandled by UMBC netminder Brian Rowland, and Bison striker Kwesi Graham knocked the loose ball in with 16 ticks left. Another UMBC defensive miscue cost them the game, as HU's Ronald Goodlett intercepted a pass deep in UMBC territory and hit the game-winner home at 94:52.
The shots were even in the game at 10-10, and Rowland made three saves for UMBC. The Retrievers have lost three of their four games in overtime this season.
