CARINGI NETS 300TH CAREER WIN AS UMBC TRIUMPHS IN KAPPA FINALE

For the second time in the tournament, Hofstra (2-0) rallied from a second-half deficit and defeated Mt. St. Mary's (1-1), 3-2, to win the Kappa Kick Off Classic, held at rain-slicked UMBC Stadium.

In the nightcap, UMBC Head Coach Pete Caringi earned his 300th collegiate coaching victory (300-102-21, 21st year overall) as the Retrievers (1-1) blanked Gardner-Webb (0-2), 3-0. Caringi is now 130-75-13 in his 12th year at UMBC, after compiling a mark of 170-27-8 at Essex (MD) Community College.

Hofstra junior and First Team All America east defender Rishi Matadeen made his first appearance of the year in the 58th minute of play vs. the Mount, and scored twice in a span of 5:37 to erase a 2-1 deficit and propel the Pride to the title. Matadeen headed in a misplayed cross by Mount netminder Brian Crum to tie the score at 70:18, then headed in a corner kick by Stephen Kent for the game-winner at 75:55. His outburst overshadowed a brilliant effort by the Mount's Brandon Scarfield. Scarfield scored twice in the game, including the game's opening goal at 9:10 and a miraculous arching shot from midfield just four seconds into the second half. Hofstra senior forward Shaun Higgins, who scored both goals vs. UMBC in the 2-1 overtime win on Friday, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

The Retrievers held Gardner-Webb to just four shots as UMBC netminder Brian Rowland made just 1 save to earn his 15th career shutout. Juniors Michael Joseph (9:37) and Brandon Quaranta (66:24) each scored their first career goals, then Quaranta expertly fed sophomore Derek McElligott for an insurance score at the 86:41 mark
