WOMEN'S HOOPS NOTCHES FOURTH STRAIGHT VICTORY; DEFEAT MOUNT ST. MARY'S 58-56 AT THE RAC

Baltimore, MD - - -The host UMBC Retrievers (10-11, 6-6 NEC) won their fourth straight contest, defeating Mount St. Mary's, 58-56, in a Northeast Conference contest Wednesday evening at the UMBC RAC Arena. Trailing 57-56, Mount St. Mary's (9-12, 6-6 NEC) guard Lauren Kokotajlo had an opportunity to win the game in the closing seconds but her runner in the lane missed everything and UMBC senior forward Sheila Johnson came down with the rebound with 3.2 seconds remaining Following a foul, Johnson converted one of two free throws, and Kokotajlo launched an errant desperation three-pointer from beyond halfcourt at the buzzer. The Mount, who committed 26 turnovers in the contest, took their final lead of the contest at 48-47 with 4:12 remaining on a three-point play by sophomore center Beth Foster. UMBC responded with back-to-back baskets by junior guard Jessie Brown and freshman guard Christine Catalanotto, giving the Retrievers a 51-48 lead with 3:05 remaining and never trailed again. UMBC led 24-19 at halftime, but the Mount scored the first five points of the second half to even the score at 24-24 with 17:31 remaining. The game went back and forth until the Mount used a 5-0 run to grab their largest lead of the contest at 37-32 with 11:54 remaining. However, UMBC answered with nine straight points to reclaim the lead at 41-37 with 8:52 remaining. UMBC senior forward Yinka Bada scored a team-high 18 points and added 4 steals, while junior forward Millette Green and Brown added 10 points each. Foster led the Mount with 21 points and 8 rebounds. The Retrievers shot forty percent from the floor (24-for-59) and were 0-for-10 from three-point range. The Mount shot forty-five percent from the floor (19-for-42) but couldn't overcome their huge amount of turnovers. - - - UMBC -
