WOMEN'S HOOPS DROPS CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE

Baltimore, MD - - -UMBC junior guard Jessie Brown scored a game-high 16 points as the host Retrievers cruised to an easy 67-45 victory over Central Connecticut State in a Northeast Conference women's basketball contest, Saturday evening at the UMBC RAC Arena. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Retrievers. UMBC (11-13, 7-8 NEC) went out to a 15-5 advantage in the opening half as they held the Blue Devils to just two field goals in the first 12:46 of the contest and took a 28-20 halftime edge. The Blue Devils closed the gap to seven points at 36-29 with 14:14 remaining in the contest, however UMBC went on a 10-0 run to push the lead to 46-29 with 10:03 remaining and Central Connecticut State (4-20, 4-11 NEC) could never recover. UMBC held the Blue Devils to just 12 field goals and 29 percent shooting (12-for-41) for the contest, while the Retrievers shot 44 percent (24-for-54) from the floor. UMBC freshman guard Matea Pender added 14 points and 6 rebounds while classmate Christine Catalanotto chipped in with 12 points. Sophomore guard Kristen Gonsalves led the Blue Devils with 13 points and sophomore guard Jill Carpenter added 12.
