PHILADELPHIA, PA (Dec. 29) - The University of Hartford women's basketball team picked up its second victory of the season with a 60-47 win over UMBC in the consolation game of the St. Joseph's Hawk Classic at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman guard Erika Messam (Pemberton, NJ) led the Hawks in scoring for the second straight game with a career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds on six of eleven shooting from the field to notch Hartford's first double-double of the season.
Senior guard Angie Pezzetta (Absecon, NJ) finished with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals while freshman Danielle Wexler (Newtown, PA) came through with a career-high 10 points and four rebounds on four of eight shooting.
Shalayna Johnson and Jessie Brown led UMBC with 12 points apiece. Millette Green added 11 points for the Retrievers.
Hartford, came out strong in the first half with the help of a 7-0 run to take a nine-point lead at 14-5 when Pezzetta hit a shot from the right wing at the 11:50 mark. The Hawks extended their first half lead to as many as 12 points when Messam knocked down two free throws to give Hartford a 30-18 lead with 2:06 left.
However, UMBC (2-7) ended the first half on a 6-0 run when Brown hit a three-pointer with only seconds remaining to cut Hartford's lead to 30-24 at halftime.
Senior guard Cheri Eleazer (Coram, NY) gave the Hawks a spark off the bench in the second half with five straight points, including a three-point play with 9:10 left to put the Hawks ahead by twelve.
Hartford (2-8) hit 12 of 15 free throws in the second half including seven of their last eight to pull away for the thirteen-point victory
Jessie Brown was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
