Baltimore, MD - - -Canisius (3-1) junior guard Jenel Stevens scored 16 points and added a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the visiting Golden Griffins to a, 65-53, non-conference victory over the UMBC Retrievers (2-1), Saturday afternoon at the UMBC RAC Arena. The Retrievers trailed just 28-24 at halftime, but Canisius outscored the hosts 16-5 over the first 5:09 of the second half to take their biggest lead of the game of 15 points at 44-29. Stevens scored 11 points during the run. UMBC was able to get as close as 8 points on three different occasions, the latest coming with 4:22 remaining on a lay-up by senior forward Millette Green, which made the score 58-50. However, Canisius scored the next 6 points to push the lead back to 14 points at 64-50 with just 1:08 remaining in the contest, and the Retrievers never threatened again. UMBC led 12-10 with 10:01 remaining in the first half, but Canisius went on a 12-2 run to grab a 22-14 lead with 6:17 remaining in the opening half. The Retrievers outscored the Golden Griffins 10-6 to climb within just four points at the break. The two teams combined for 64 three-point field goal attempts, a new UMBC record. Canisius made 11 of their 29 attempts (37.9 percent) and the Retrievers were just 8 for 35 (22.9 percent). The Golden Griffins controlled the play in the paint, outrebounding UMBC by a 50-35 margin. Freshman guard Cheri Wittlieb added 14 points for the Golden Griffins, who shot 36.1 percent (22-for-61) for the game. Junior guard Lonnie Brown added 13 rebounds. Senior guard Jessie Brown led UMBC with 16 points, but was just 5-for-16 from the floor and only 4 of 14 from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Lara Seamon added 9 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and Green added 9 points.
