WOMEN'S SOCCER SHUT OUT BY NAVY, 4-0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A goal by senior forward Kara Hardebeck (Bellevue, Neb.) just five minutes into the game paved the way for the Mids' 4-0 victory over neighboring UMBC (5-10-1) Monday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The win extended Navy's (14-0-4) unbeaten streak to 18 games this season as the Mids and Charlotte are the two remaining unbeatens in Division I women's soccer to date. Meanwhile, Navy tied the school record by producing its 14th shutout of the year. The 1998 Navy team also posted 14 shutouts en route to a 17-3-1 season.

Hardebeck's game winner (4:49) was set up by a nice serve from sophomore midfielder Nicole Waggoner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.). Waggoner put the ball in the air and Hardebeck out-raced her defender to get the ball with just keeper Robin Babaris to beat.

Minutes before the half, junior forward Stacy Finley (Alamo, Calif.) scored the first of her two goals of the evening. Again, a beautifully set up play, junior defender Quinn Rinehart (Winter Garden, Fla.) set the score up deep in the back. Rinehart dribbled the ball up to midfield and served forward Amelia Sheveland (Farmers Branch, Texas). Sheveland crossed the ball from the right side to an open Finley on the left side of the box who promptly fired in the shot.

Navy tacked on a pair of goals in the second half to secure its 14th win of the season. Finley took passes from Sheveland and team captain Nadia Sheikh (Canal Winchester, Ohio) to find the back of the net in the 79th minute, while sophomore forward Katie Eames (El Cerrito, Calif.) netted her second goal of the year as Stephanie Parker (Carmichael, Calif.) and Sarah Hessinger (Oceanside, Calif.) hooked up to serve Eames the ball in the 83rd minute.

Navy keeper Kim Bonafede (Burke, Va.) played 81:18 of the 90 minutes, warding off four Retriever shots. Senior Kristen Hansen (Weymouth, Mass.) finished out the final 8:42 in goal. Hansen made her first appearance in a Navy game since breaking a finger in the opener in which she was the Mids' starting keeper.

While UMBC had four shots on goal, the most testing shot was by midfielder Caitlin Kinsella in the first half in which Bonafede couldn't quite hold onto the ball and had to jump on it to keep it from going back into the field of play.
