Brooklyn, NY (Oct. 20, 2002) -- Lori Quintavalle (Haddonfield, NJ) and Lauren Cunningham (Baltimore, MD) tallied second-half goals for UMBC, which notched its first Northeast Conference victory of the season with a 2-0 triumph over Long Island at LIU Field.
UMBC (4-9-1, 1-5-1 NEC), which controlled the second half with a 12-2 shots advantage, opened the scoring in the 60th minute. Cunningham passed the ball from the left side to Quintavalle, who deflected it past senior goalkeeper Mary Jaeger (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) for her third tally of the season.
The Retrievers kept the pressure on and added an insurance marker in the 85th minute. Kristin English (Millersville, MD) lofted a pass from her own end of the field to Cunningham, who rocketed one from 20 yards off Jaeger's hands and in for her fifth goal of the year.
Senior Laura Brosious (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had five shots and several quality scoring chances for the Blackbirds (5-10, 3-4). She banged a shot from 15 yards off the crossbar in the 24th minute and lifted other blast just over the net in the 75th minute when it was still a one-goal game.
Robin Babaris (Ontario, Canada) made three saves for her third shutout of the season and Kerie Sample (Annapolis, MD) took a team-high five shots for UMBC, which owned a 16-8 margin overall.
Jaeger (3-3) made five saves for the Blackbirds, who have dropped two of their last three and four of six.
